The Science of Writing Hooks

So you have your verses written and/or recorded and now it's on to the hook or maybe it's the other way around. The hook is the glue that holds the verses together and give the audience something to sing along to. There's a science to writing hooks-even the best songs can get ruined by a horrible hook. In this article, I will give you three guidelines for writing hooks.

1. It has to be catchy but not too repetitive. Like I said, the hook is something that new listeners to your song can sing along with, because they have no idea what you're going to say in your verses. You have to make something memorable for people to remember other than your verses. We all remember that annoying song "Racks" by YC where the rapper kept repeating the same words for fifteen seconds. Sure it blew up, but you only get one shot and if I'm not mistaken: the guy that was featured on the song has a better career than the main rapper. In other cases, Nas sung the words "I only need one mic" over and over in one of the greatest Hip Hop songs ever. If you're going to repeat the same words, make a melody out of it as best as you can to make it memorable. 2. It Has To Make Sense.

Now this might be self-explanatory, but I can't tell you how many times I heard a verse talking about one thing and the hook talking about another. I was totally confused by the time the second verse came around. Your verse can't be about trying to make it and your hook will be about partying. You have too much going on. Again, the hook is the glue that holds your verses together: not just some random words thrown together.

3. It has to Sound Good.

Again, this is self-explanatory but I can't tell you how many times I heard a hook that didn't sound right. Me personally, I have a speech impediment so I have to get a singer or someone who has a normal voice to sing the hook. Now there is a program that is kinda like Auto tune that may help you with your hook. I'll leave the link below. If your hook doesn't sound good- it won't be catchy, your audience can't sing along with it, it won't make sense and a bad hook can mess up even the greatest of songs.
